21 Companies served Notices for not paying Water Tax

Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: Taking a strong action against some companies against illegal drawal of water from reservoirs,  Water Resources department in Odisha has served notices to 21 firms for not paying water tax till date.

The show-cause notices were sent to South Eastern Railway (SER), Jharsuguda Division, Orient Paper Mills, In Thermal, Hindalco, Bhushan and Steel Power, SMG Power Generation Ltd, Aditya Alumina, SPS Steel and Power, Shyam Metallics and Energy, Biraj Steel and Energy, Action Ispat and Energy, Vedanta Alumina, Sterlite, Ind Bharat Energy, MSP Metallics and Aryan Ispat and Power, SER, Sambalpur Division and Rathi Steel and Power, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), and Nalco, asking them to pay water tax which is due since 2005-06 immediately.

It can be noted that these 21 companies have been drawing water from Hirakud and Upper Kolab reservoirs. The companies were asked to sign a supplementary agreement with Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) to pay tax as per water usage. However, water will not be supplied to these firms if they fail to pay their dues or sign the agreement by November 20.
