BJP ashamed of Hitesh Bagarti, Welcomes CBI Move

Bhubaneswar, Nov 05: Odisha BJP feels ashamed of its ex-MLA Hitesh Bagarti, who was arrested by the CBI in the mega chit fund scam along with BJD MP Ramchandra Hansda and former BJD MLA Subarna Nayak on Tuesday. However, the party welcomed the central agency's move to arrest the tainted leaders in the ponzi case.

"We feel ashamed of having given party ticket to Hitesh Kumar Bagarti. Had we not given party ticket to Bagarti, he would not have become an MLA and cheated people," BJP spokesman Suresh Pujari told reporters.

However, Bagarti was not given party ticket again in 2014. In a press release party State spokesperson Samir Mohanty welcomed the CBI's move to arrest the politicians in the scam. He alleged that the BJD government wanted to protect its tainted leaders by ordering a crime branch probe into scam. The Economic Offences Wing had allegedly destroyed the evidence to help the leaders. He further said that the CBI should take strong action against the crime branch, which helped the tainted leaders during the investigation.

However, he washed his party's hands off the ponzi scam over the arrest of Bagarti saying, BJP has no relation with the party’s former MLA Hitesh Bagarti. He had abstained himself from all party affairs before the general election. Since he is not in the party any more, there is no need to take action against him, he clarified in the press release.

Talking to reporters senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra said that Bagarti was no more a member of BJP. But he admitted that Bagarti was a director of Nabadiganta Capital Service, the chit fund firm that duped thousands of people in the state, when he was a BJP MLA.
