Bhubaneswar, Nov 08: Several temples located near the NH 5 were demolished on Friday for the expansion of NH in a major eviction drive in the state capital jointly conducted by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), General Administration (GA) Department and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).

The temples including Maa Kochilei Temple, Maa Tarini Temple, Maa Basanti Durga Temple and Shri Trinath Temple located along the NH 5 near Rasulgarh Square were demolished during the drive. Besides, the boundary of the newly constructed police housing board corporation colony was also evicted.

The eviction drive was conducted for the removal of unauthorized religious structures for the expansion of NH 5 following requests from the NHAI authority four months ago.

Despite opposition from the local people, the temples and unauthorized structures were removed with the help of four JCB machines, two cranes and six trucks. Two platoons of police force were deployed on the site to avert any possible tension during the eviction drive.
