Doctor arrested for Sterilisation Deaths

Bilaspur, Nov 13: A doctor was arrested in connection with the deaths of 13 women at a state-run sterilisation camp in Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh. Dr. RK Gupta and his assistant carried out the family planning operation on 83 women in Pendari village.

Police have launched search operation to find other doctors and assistants who had conducted the surgery at the government camp in the village that led to the death of women and over 50 were admitted to various hospitals in critical condition.

Dr Gupta, who had been earlier honoured by the state government for conducting a large number of sterilisations that was a record, was suspended following the Bilaspur tragedy. He was arrested on Wednesday night.

However, the exact cause of death still unclear. The government has ordered a probe into the case.

Reports said that Dr Gupta conducted surgery on 83 women in five hours. But the according to the government rule, a surgeon can only perform 35 operations in a day.

The Chhattisgarh Food and Drug Control department has banned 6 drugs which were used in the sterilisation camp in Bilaspur. Samples of the drugs and injections used in the surgery have been sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kolkata.
