Kolkata, Nov 14: Suspended TMC MP Kunal Ghosh, one of the accused in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, attempted suicide inside his prison cell on Friday, days after his threat to CBI that he would end his life if the investigative agency did not take proper action against the real culprits in the case.
Ghosh is currently lodged in the Presidency jail. He was rushed to the SSM hospital after he allegedly consumed an overdose of sleeping pills early morning. West Bengal Prison Minister HA Safi said that the Rajya Sabha MP used to have 2-3 pills on regular basis as per the prescription. He took the pills over 50 pills at 2:30 am.
Ghosh was admitted to the Critical Care Unit of the hospital. His condition is said to be stable now.
The politician is behind bars since November 2013 for allegedly duping thousands of depositors in the state and neighbouring Odisha. Ghosh, a journalist by profession, was the former CEO of Saradha Group firm Bengal Media Ltd.
Earlier, he had threatened to commit suicide when he was produced in the court three days ago. He claimed that the CBI had not acted on the files of Bengal Media.
