6 dead during Standoff at Rampal's Ashram

Hisar, Nov 19: Six people, including a child, and five women have died during the clashes between police and followers of self proclaimed godman Rampal at his ashram here.

However, the cause of their deaths is yet to be known, Haryana police said on Wednesday. The dead bodies were found inside the ashram. Police sent those to hospital for postmortem.

There were no bullet or other injury marks on the dead. The police have not yet entered the ashram. The autopsy will reveal the cause of deaths," Haryana DGP SN Vashisht said at a news conference emphasising the ashram inmates had not died in the police action.

The dead bodies were handed over to police a day after clashes between the supporters of the controversial guru Rampal and security forces, which were attacked for entering the Ashram premises to arrest Rampal. Over 200 people, including policemen were injured in the violence. The angry police targeted media following the violence to stop the recording of the situation. Around 70 journalists were injured, their cameras were snatched and they were beaten up on legs and hands.

Rampal has been evading arrest in a contempt of court case. He has been using women and children as shields for nearly two weeks, is said to be inside the ashram with his own commandos.
