Senior Congress Leader Murli Deora No More


Mumbai, Nov 24: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Murli Deora passed away early morning on Monday following a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at 3:25 am at his residence. He was 77.

Deora is survived by his wife and two sons including former Congress MP and minister Milind Deora. He was undergoing treatment at the Breach Candy hospital. However, he was discharged from there two days ago.

Deora was known to be very close to Gandhi family. He was the Union petroleum minister in the UPA government. He was a popular face of the Congress with his nearly four decade long political career. He was heading the city party in Mumbai unit for 22 years.

During his long political career,he served as the mayor of the city from 1977 to 1978 and was later elected to Lok Sabha for four times from South Mumbai. Later, this seat was passed on to his son Milind, who was elected from this constituency twice in 2004 and 2009, losing in the recent 2014 polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence at the demise of the strong congress leader.

"A dedicated leader, Shri Murli Deora's warm nature made him popular across party lines. News of his demise is saddening. My deepest condolences to Milind Deora and his family," tweeted Modi.

"One of the most amiable persons I knew. He had friends across Party Line. We shall forever miss him. Our condolences to the family," tweeted senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh.
