Kathak Legend Sitara Devi No More

Mumbai, Nov 25: Kathak legend Sitara Devi is no more. She breathed her last at Jaslok hospital where she was admitted. She passed away at 1.30 am on early Tuesday morning. She was 94. Her last rituals will take place on Thursday morning.

The dance queen was waiting for her son, who was abroad for a programme. Sitara Devi was first married to director K Asif of Mughal-e-Azam fame and later to Pratap Barot.

She had bagged India Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 for her immense contribution to the classical dance for six decades. She had also acted in number of Hindi films. However, she was away from the movie as she believed that acting was affecting her dance.

Born as Dhannolakshmi to a family of Brahmin "kathakar" Sukhdev Maharaj in Kolkata in 1920, she chose school and dance over an early wedding. Sitara Devi drew from the themes, poetry and choreography collected by her father in her choreographies. She also got inspired from the environment around her - whether it is a town or a village.
