Chit Fund Scam: HC rejects Bail Plea of DSP Pramod Panda

Cuttack, Dec 15: In a setback to Crime Branch Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pramod Panda, his bail plea was turned down by Orissa High Court on Monday in connection with the chit fund scam.

Panda had moved the high court apprehending arrest in connection with the multi-crore ponzi scam in the state. With the rejection of his bail plea, the CBU may summon him for interrogation for his alleged links with the AT group, a major player in the chit fund scam, and Jagabandhu Panda.

His name cropped up in the scam during a raid on Nov 18 at the residences of Jagabandhu Panda and Pramod Panda, who is the DSP in Crim Branch in Bhadrak. The CBI seized few documents that showed his nexus with AT group and Jagabandhu Panda, against whom the chargesheet was filed in the CBI special court.

The CBI on Dec 12 took Jagabandhu Panda on 9-day remand for interrogation to find out the link between Pramod Panda and the chit fund firm AT group.

Pramod Panda was earlier suspended in February and is now posted in Nayagarh. He had allegedly threatened Alok Jena, who had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court against the chit fund scam after which the apex court ordered a CBI probe into the mega scam.

It can be noted that the crime branch was earlier investigating the chit fund scam before the CBI. There are allegations that the funds of AT Group had been diverted to an account of a computer centre, which was run by Pramod Panda's close aide, in Bhadrak.
