Dharm Jagran Samiti cancels Dec 25 Aligarh Re-conversion Event

Aligarh, Dec 17: Dharm Jagran Samiti, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) linked outfit, has cancelled the mass reconversion event scheduled to take place on Dec 25 in Aligarh under pressure.

The Hindutva group Dharm Jagran Samiti had planned a religion conversion programme under the tagline "Ghar Wapsi" in Aligarh. However, the plan was called off after the controversy surfaced due to mass conversion event held at Agra a week ago. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh police has arrested Nand Kishore Balmiki, the prime accused in the alleged forced religion conversions in Agra.

However, the Samiti did not speak on the reason behind the cancellation of the event. The group was in controversy after it announced a mass conversion ceremony at a local college in Aligarh on Christmas.

Following the announcement, the district administration had imposed Section 144 in the city prohibiting gathering of crowds. The BJP was also dragged into the controversy after its MP Yogi Adityanath had said that he will also attend the event. He justified the re-conversion to Hinduism if people were willing.
