RD Women College to get University Status

Bhubaneswar, Jan 01: Rama Devi (RD) Women's Autonomous College, Odisha's premier college, will get the university status as the Centre has accepted the state government's proposal, informed the Higher Education minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi on Thursday.

With the approval the college will be the first women's university in Odisha and the second in the country after SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai.

Besides RD College, the Rashtriya Uchhatar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA) under the Union HRD ministry has also accepted the proposal of the Odisha government to confer cluster university status to Khallikote Autonomous College in Berhampur.

Talking to media today, Minister Pradip Kumar Panigrahi said that all the women colleges under the jurisdiction of Utkal University will now come under RD Women's University and Khallikote Cluster University will cover the nearby colleges in Berhampur.

The state government will initiate the process for implementation for these two proposed universities very soon, the minister said.

After the approval, the Centre will release Rs 55 crore each for these two new universities in three years under RUSA for infrastructure development. Now more new courses will be introduced in these two new universities.

The government is planning to make the RD College as the University from 2015-16 academic session.
