Lucknow, Jan 03: BSP chief Maywati on Saturday slammed the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly discriminating against Dalit leaders like Kanshi Ram to consider for Bharat Ratna, India's highest civillian award.
Addressing a press conference here today, the BSP supremo said, "Just like the previous Congress-led UPA government, the NDA government is adopting the same discriminatory attitude while honouring two persons of the same caste - Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malviya - with the Bharat Ratna recently".
She batted for Kanshi Ram for the prestigious award but his sacrifices and contribution were ignored and the government announced the names of its choice for the award. She also took the name of Jyotiba Phule, a Dalit, who could have been considered in the field of education and efforts he made to establish equality in society.
Even many other deserving persons have been ignored while announcing the names of Vajpayee and Malviya for the Bharat Ratna award, she alleged.
Mayawati also attacked the Centre for clearing the bills through ordinance route. She alleged that the present government is taking decision that is not in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution of India.
She opposed the land bill ordinance saying it was against the interest of farmers. The ordinance route was taken up hurriedly. The amendments could have been done in next session of Parliament, she said.
Her statement came against the backdrop of ordinances on land bill, insurance that increased foreign investment limit in the sector to 49 per cent from 26 per cent and the ordinance for coal block auction.
