NRIs may have Voting Right, SC issues Notices to EC, Centre

New Delhi, Jan 12: Good news for NRIs as they will be soon able to cast votes and choose their representatives in the elections held in India. This came after the Supreme Court on Monday cleared the deck for NRI voting and issued notices to the Election Commission and Centre directing them to take steps to ensure that the Indian origins living in foreign countries are also able to vote.

The apex court bench headed by Justice HL Dattu said that the NRIs must be allowed to e-vote within 8 weeks of elections.

Earlier, the court had asked the Centre to make its stand clear on the Election Commission's proposal for allowing NRIs to cast their votes through proxy voting and e-ballots in polls in India.

The bench headed by Dattu had granted four weeks time to the Centre to respond to the proposal prepared by a 12-member committee led by Vinod Zutshi, Deputy Election Commissioner, for Exploring Feasibility of Alternative Options for Voting by Overseas Electors.
