Holding Saraswati Prayers in Schools spark Controversy

Ahmedabad, Jan 24: Holding prayers for Goddess Saraswati in all the local municipal schools in Ahmedabad on the occasion of Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) has triggered fresh controversy in Gujarat. The Muslim parents and Congress leaders questioned the authorities for such order.

Recently, the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board has directed all the government schools including Udu medium schools to have Saraswati Vandana and puja in the morning on Basant Panchami on Saturday.

The order was issued to all the schools in order to make the students understand the importance of education in life. Since Devi Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge, art and learning, the students should perform vandana and puja of the Goddess on the occasion of Basant Panchami in the morning before beginning classes in the schools.

However, the Congress and Muslims oppose such order in the Urdu schools. Congress alleged that move was an attack on the fundamental rights of Muslims and other religions. The party is likely to stage protest against such order by the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board.
