Indian Fishermen to be shot if cross Lankan Waters, warns Sri Lanka

New Delhi, March 07: Sri Lankan Prime Miniser Ranil Wickramesinghe openly challenged India making a controversial statement ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the neighbouring country. He said that Indian fishermen will be shot if they cross Lankan waters.

Targeting the Indian fishermen, he said that if someone breaks into his house, he can shoot. He objected the repeated violation of law by Indian fishermen, who are crossing the border and getting arrested by the Lankan authorities.

He suggested them to stay on Indian side and not to fish in their waters.

There would be much debate on the issue during the meeting between Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the Lankan PM today.

Reacting to statement, MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said that India will strongly take up the fishermen issue with Sri Lanka.
