High Tension in Nagaland after Rape Accused beaten to Death

Dimapur, March 07: High tension gripped Nagaland after a rape accused was lynched by a mob in Dimapur. The Taliban style of instant justice and punishment have shocked many in the region and sparked protests.

TR Zeliang, Nagaland chief minister, admitted that the administration was responsible for such barbarism. An inquiry has been ordered and the guilty must be punished, he said. He also admitted that relaxing section 144 in the area was a mistake.

The nation was shocked when a mob dragged the rapist out of Dimapur Central Jail, paraded him, tortured him by stripping naked, stones pelted at him and he was beaten to death on Thursday. The security forces deployed in the jail remained silent to avoid any casualty when a mob broke into the jail.

The victim, Syed Farid Khan, was accused of raping a college girl on Feb 24. He was arrested on Feb 25 and sent to judicial custody in the Dimapur central jail. He was believed to be a Bangladeshi immigrant. But now the reports claimed that he was the resident of Assam.

The government has suspended Dimapur District Collector and three police officials including the Superintendent of Police, and chief of the Dimapur central jail in connection with the case.
