Sonia defends Manmohan Singh after Summon in Coalgate

New Delhi, March 12: Defending former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after summon was served to him in the coal block allocation scam, Congress president Sonia Gandhi expressed her outrage over the news in his support.

Along with senior party leaders Mrs Gandhi marched from Congress headquarters to residence of Singh to express solidarity with him today. She said that the party is with the ex-prime minister, who is known as the man of integrity and honesty.

She expressed outrage after summon was served to Singh as an accused in the multi-crore coal scam. Other leaders including P Chidambaram, Anand Sharma, Janardhan Dwivedi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Digvijaya Singh, Ambika Soni, Veerappa Moily, Ajay Maken, Ghulam Nabi Azad, AK Antony, Ashwini Kumar also backed Singh in this corruption case.

A meeting will be held chaired by Mrs Gandhi in the defence of Singh to discuss the counter attacks from the BJP on the issue.

The Congress party came out in support of Singh after the Patiala House court on Wednesday served a summon to the former prime minister as an accused and others including industrialist KM Birla, Hindalco officials, and former coal secretary PC Parakh asking them to appear before the court on April 8 in connection with the coal scam.

Singh was earlier interrogated by the CBI in connection with the allocation of Talabira II block to Hindalco when he was the holding the coal portfolio. He is the first former PM to have been examined in the case.
