BJD backs Mines and Minerals Bill in Rajya Sabha

News

New Delhi, March 20: Despite political differences with the BJP, the members of BJD supported the Mines and Minerals Development and Regulation Amendment Bill, 2015, for passing the bill in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

While the Congress, the Left opposed the bill in the House demanding to send it back to the select committee, the JDU staged a walkout. However, the members of BJD, TMC, SP, NCP and BSP voted in favour of the bill.

The BJD MP Bhatruhari Mahatab said that the party welcomed the bill and gave its consent for the interest of Odisha.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had earlier demanded to keep provision in the bill for funds for the minerals-rich states like Odisha. The Centre considered his proposal and presented the bill by making an amendment to provide funds to the states for which Odisha could generate more revenue apart from the 15% royalty.
