Ruckus in Odisha Assembly over Power Tariff Hike

Bhubaneswar, March 25: The opposition members in Odisha assembly on Wednesday created ruckus over the power tariff hike in the state. The proceedings were disrupted and the Speaker Niranjan Pujari was forced to adjourn the House twice.

The opposition members of the Congress and BJP shouted slogans condemning the hike in the power tariff announced by the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) on Tuesday.

Congress demanded for the suspension of the question hour, seeking a debate on the issue. But their plea was not accepted by the Speaker. Reacting to the price hike, Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra said that the party will continue to raise the issue in the House as the power tariff hike will put additional burden on lakhs of consumers in the state.

BJP legislature party leader Basanta Panda also condemned the move by the government that announced the hike during the session. He said that the party will fight for the rollback of the decision.

However, BJD in its defence said that the proposal to hike was not recent. The government had avoided the hike in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
