Vikas Swarup to be Next MEA Spokesperson replacing Akbaruddin

New Delhi, March 27: Diplomat Vikas Swarup has been appointed as the new spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) replacing Akbaruddin, who will be promoted as the additional secretary very soon. Swarup is the celebrated novelist, an author of "Q&A" on which the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire was based.

His appointment came after Akbaruddin was posted as the "Chief Coordinator" of the India-Africa Forum Summit, scheduled on Oct 29 this year in New Delhi.

The 1986 batch IFS officer Vikas Swarup is currently holding the post as the Joint Secretary (UN-Political) in New Delhi since September 2013. Earlier, he was in Ankara, Washington DC, Addis Ababa, London and Pretoria and as Consul General in Osaka-Kobe, Japan.

Very few people know him as the diplomat. But, he is best known author of Q&A, the bestselling debut novel. Hollywood film "Slumdog Millionnaire" that won 8 Oscars was made from the novel.
