Odisha Govt slapped with Rs 29 Lakh Fine

Cuttack, April 18: The Orissa High court has slapped the state government with Rs 29 lakh fine to pay as the maintainace charge to the death convict, freed from the jail on health ground.

The court directed the government to deposit the amount at the court within four weeks.

The order came after the father of Duleswar Barik, sentenced to death, prayed the court to release his son on medical ground. He said that his son is not mentally well and needs treatment.

Admitting the petition, the court freed the convict and asked government to bear all the medical expenses of Barik. However, the government did not obey the ruling.

It can be noted that Barik was sentenced to death for killing six people.
