Students protest against Quota hike for SC/ST

Sambalpur, May 07: The medical students of Burla medical college and hospital raised their voice against the state government's recent decision to hike quota for SC and STs in the state-run higher education institutes.

Hundreds of students staged a rally from their college premises today demanding rollback of the decision that would create more space between castes and poses as hindrance to calculate the talents of the aspirants who are under general category.

The students said that the candidates should be selected for the admission in medical colleges on the basis of merit. With such move by the government, the general category students will be deprived of higher education.

The protest may continue to spread across the state against the decision. The government has raised reservation for the SC and ST students in the higher educational institutions to 38.75 per cent from 20 per cent.
