GST may face Hurdles in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, May 07: The significant bill common goods and services tax (GST) might have been passed in the Lok Sabha, but it will face hurdles in the Rajya Sabha for which the government is seeking support of opposition parties to clear the legislation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to introduce the GST next year from April 1.

If the bill gets passed and adopted, the GST will replace the conventional system of collecting tax. The multi-layered central and state tax such excise duties, VAT will be converted to a single unified tax that will ease system of commerce and trade in the country.

To clear the legislation is the top priority for the government, which is in a minority in the upper house. Around two-third majority is required to endorse the bill.
