Four Athlete students attempt Suicide, One Dead

Alappuzha, May 07: In a shocking incident, four girl students belonging to Sports Authority of India (SAI) attempted suicide by consuming poison at SAI centre in Kerala. One of them died in the wee hours.

The deceased was Aparna Ramabhadran (16) of Panackal House, Chembuthara, Aryad grama panchayat.

Director General of Sports Authority of India Injeti Srinivas said the suicide attempt by four athletes at SAI Centre in Kerala was the most shocking and tragic incident in the top sport body's history.

One of the athletes died early morning and three others were admitted to hospital after they ate a poisonous fruit in an apparent suicide pact following alleged harassment by seniors.

"We are faced with most tragic and shocking incident where four of our girl trainees attempted to commit suicide and it is most unfortunate that one of the trainees has already succumbed to the poisonous substance", said Injeti Srinivas, SAI.

Meanwhile, DG SAI will be travelling to Kerala for a comprehensive assessment in the matter. According to him full justice will be done in the matter.

"We are fully aware of the gravity of this matter and the sports minister has specifically directed me to visit the spot and take first hand assessment. First about the medical treatment of the girls who are in the ICU also to meet with the parents and convey our highest assurance to them of doing justice in every manner and extending all possible support", he said.
