Kargil-Leh NH opens after 5 months

Srinagar, May 14: After five months, the 434 km long Srinagar Kargil Leh national highway has been thrown open for commuters.

The re-opening of the National Highway 1D was done in a ceremony on Wednesday by Lieutenant General Subrata Saha, GOC, Chinar Corps. The highway was kept open for a month during the winter season.

"Today on 13th may 2015 Zoji La pass opening was held. BothBeacon and Vijayak projects have opened this pass whichwas covered with snow. From Gagangir to 108 km Beacon removes snow and till Dras for 108 km. Vijayakremoves the snow", said an official

The snow clearance work got over during the first week of May or earlier this month. In the last one week, trials were undertaken using light and heavy vehicles to ascertain that the road is fit and safe for vehicular traffic.

Srinagar-Kargil-Leh Highway is not only crucial for strategic purposes, but also important to boost the tourism sector in the Ladakh region.
