Bhubaneswar, May 30: A central team of water resources department visited Odisha to hold discussion over the river interlink between Mahanadi and Godavari.

The team comprising water resources deputy secretary Amarjeet Singh, water commission chairman AV Pandia and national water development agency DG Hussein met Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday and discussed the river interlinking.

The Centre is planning to interlink rivers from Himalayan region to Penisular via Mahanadi and Godavari rivers. Under the project, the water from Himalayan region will pass through Ganga River, from where water will pass through Baitarani, Brahmani and Mahanadi Rivers to Rusikulya, Godabari Krishna and Kaveri Rivers.

A proposed dam will be built up in Nayagarh by blocking the water near Manibhadra. Proposal is also to construct a big canal of around 827 km in the district through which the water will pass on to the major areas including Nayagarh, Khurda, Ganjam and Gajapati in Odisha and Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram and Visakhapatnam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Both Odisha and Andhra will be benefited by this project.
