PM to flag off his pet project 'Digital India' today

New Delhi, July 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off his pet scheme 'Digital India Project' on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister will present the government's road map for digitizing India by unveiling various schemes worth Rs 1 lakh crore like Digital Locker, e-education, e-health, and a national scholarship portal.

With this mega campaign, the governemnt aims to establish broadband connectivity in 2.5 lakh villages, promote e-governance, universal phone connectivity and for India to be a global leader of IT in services like health, education and banking in order to transform India into a connected knowledge economy.

The launch is expected to be attended by nearly 10,000 guests including top business leaders RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Tata Group CEO Cyrus Mistry, Wipro chief Azim Premji among others.

Digital India is a plan to connect the entire country through broadband by 2019. The plan has been initiated and the national fibre network is already working on laying the fibre for this project. 250000 gram panchayats are to be connected through optic fibre.

There will be WiFi at shcools, universities and public wifi hotspots. The aim of the project is to deliver government services to the citizens directly. The government also wants to ensure smart phones in the hand of every citizen by 2019. The cost is likely to be nearly Rs 1 lakh crore to 1.3 lakh crore.
