Expenditure on education, health an investment: Kejriwal

New Delhi,July 3: Asserting that education and health are Delhi government's topmost priority, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said the expenditure on the two sectors is an investment.

"We consider the money being spent on education and health as an investment for the future. For the first time, the budget allocation for education by any government has seen a quantum jump.

"We have doubled the education budget, hiking it by 106 per cent while the budget for health has been increased by 45 per cent," he said while addressing a gathering of principals and teachers.

The principals and teachers from 50 schools who have volunteered to be develop as "model schools" were here to interact with former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who suggested reviewing syllabi in universities and senior secondary schools to make the education system more skill-oriented.

Allocating a budget of Rs 9,836 crore for education sector in the financial year 2015-16, the Delhi Government had announced a plan of developing 50 schools as model schools.

"We haven't selected these schools, they have volunteered to develop themselves as model schools. While these 50 schools will be developed in this financial year, by next year we will develop all 1,110 schools under Delhi government," he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was in attendance there, said the government can provide budget and facilitate development activities, but the real initiatives are to be taken by the educators.
