7 detained for murderous assault on Utkal University

Bhubaneswar,July 27: Commissionerate Police on Sunday arrested seven persons including three students for their involvement in the murderous assault on two Utkal University students. 

The arrested, identified as Sangram Keshari Patra (29) of Jajpur district, Soumya Ranjan Sahoo (25) of Satyanagar, Arun Kumar Mansingh (26) of Tamando, Jitendra Padhiary (25) of Nandankanan, Rakesh Kumar Tarenia (23) of Jagatsinghpur district, Smruti Ranjan Rout (20) of Jagatsinghpur district and Pabitra Kumar Nayak (20) of Chandrasekharpur, were produced in a local court.

"We have arrested seven persons for yesterday's violence inside the University campus of which four are gym trainers/instructors, who had engaged the students to indulge in anti-social activities inside the campus. We are keeping an eye on these people and the centres run by them," Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma told to OST.

He said police patrolling in the University campus has been intensified.

"The vice chancellor and other officials of the university are in constant touch with us to maintain law and order inside," the Police Commissioner said.

But the University authorities have asked the non-students to immediately vacate the hostels where they are staying illegally.

"We would take strict legal action against those involved in criminal activities," he warned.

The University students took to the streets and blocked National Highway-5 after two students Ashok Nayak, and Mahesh Prasad of the Gopabandhu Hostel were grievously injured in the attack by some non-students near the University canteen on Saturday afternoon.
