Fake currency seized at Koraput

Koraput,August13:Fake currency notes having a face value of Rs 5,25,500 were seized and two persons arrested in Koraput district, the police said today.

The accused, identified as Ujala Naukaraju (30) and Nageswar Selur (32) of Biriput village were sent to judicial custody after being arrested yesterday as a court rejected their bail application.

Acting on a tip off about ciruclation of fake notes by the duo in the area, police seized as many as 170 fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination and atleast 711 forged notes of Rs 500 denomination, Koraput SP Charan Singh Meena said.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to have received the fake notes of Rs 5,50,000 from a person in Andhra Pradesh for circulation in the region, police said.

"They have already circulated a few fake notes in the area. whether duo was working as agent for someone else
is yet to be ascertained. The notes seem to be scanned copies of original notes. For further interrogation we will
seek the remand of the duo from court," Inspector In-Charge of Narayanpatna police station P R Chottray said.

Police suspect the fake notes could have been used at weekly haats and rural markets in remote areas of the district.

"We have urged people in the interior areas to verify the notes during transaction to find its genuineness and to inform the nearest police station if they suspect any foul play," the SP said.
