Bhubaneswar,August 14:Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda welcomed the decision of the State government over the suspend of SP Satish Gajbhiye yesterday.
He said,"This is a good step. But the police brutality in Kendrapara as well as the other allegations against this officer are of a serious nature. They must be thoroughly probed and strict action taken."
Bowing to the pressure from High Court Bar Association,Opposition parties and public opinion against police brutality on anti-Sarathi protesters, especially on a lawyer and a BJP leader, in Kendrapara last week.
Sources said, chief minister Naveen Patnaik took the action basing on the report of inspector-general of police (Central range) R.P. Koche, who was asked to submit a report to the government on the allegations of police brutality. The action was taken for flouting All India Services Conduct Rule and insensitive behaviour towards public, they added.
The High Court Bar Association and the BJP had served the government an ultimatum to take action against the IPS officer by Friday. The Bar had even warned to boycott Independence Day celebrations on Saturday if the government fails to take action by the deadline while the saffron party decided to lay siege to the office of director-general of police (DGP) in Cuttack on the same day.
Demanding a judicial inquiry into the brutal police attack on the protestors and pending such probe, immediate suspension and arrest of Gajbhiye, the Bar had already announced to abstain from the court proceedings till August 14.
