India's first lady Suvra Mukherjee passes away

New Delhi,August 18:India's first lady President Pranab Mukherjee's wife Suvra Mukherjee died today. She was suffering from respiratory disorders. She was also a heart patient and had been in the intensive care unit.

She was admitted to a Delhi hospital last week. The President was on a two-day visit to Odisha when she fell ill. He had cut short his trip to return to Delhi.

Pranab and Suvra got married on July 13, 1957. Suvra hailed from Narail in Bangladesh and migrated at the age of 10 to Kolkata. They have a daughter and two sons.

Their elder son Abhijit Mukherjee contested from the Jangipur in West Bengal in the by-elections and became a Congress MP when his father vacated the seat of Jangipur.
