News

Bhubaneswar,August20: State Mines minister Prafulla Mallick today said the State government will approach Centre on Posco project.

The Minister said this after high-level review meeting on the Posco project chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Minister Mallick said that the State Government would hold discussion with Posco seeking Union
Government's mediation.

He also said that the Chief Secretary would apprise the Union Government about the present status of the project. Chief Secretary GC Pati, Mines Secretary and senior officials of the state government attended
the meeting.

It should be noted that earlier Posco has put on hold plans to build a steel plant in Odisha after land acquisition and farmer protests stalled the $12-billion project for a decade. Posco's 12-million ton-a-year Odisha project, which was the nation's biggest foreign investment, failed to take off since 2005 because of opposition from local farmers and the failure to secure iron ore mining leases, initially promised for free to the company.
