Big Achivement For India as UN adopts text-based negotiations on UNSC reforms

United Nations, September 15: India on Monday described as a "significant development" the UN General Assembly's decision to adopt text-based negotiations for the Security Council reforms that is expected to provide momentum to the talks on the long-pending process.

India termed as "historic" and "path-breaking" the adoption of the document, saying the decision puts the Inter- Governmental Process formally on an "irreversible text-based negotiations path" and changes the "dynamics" of the negotiations on achieving UNSC reforms.

During the meeting UN General Assembly President Sam Kutesa circulated letters containing the positions of key countries, including Russia, the US and China which refused to contribute to the negotiating text.

"This is a significant development as after more than two decades, we can now commence text-based negotiations so that the long-pending reforms of the UN Security Council can be achieved," Spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said.
