Malegaon blast: Situation remains tense; curfew relaxed
 Malegaon
 Tuesday, September 30, 2008

The powerloom town of Malegaon on Tuesday remained tense following the blast which killed four persons and injured 70 others but the situation is under control, police said.

The injured also included seven policemen and 11 homeguards, who were hurt in stone pelting by a mob after the blast at Bhikku Chowk last night, they said.

Six policemen and Additional SP, Viresh Prabhu, were among the injured police said, adding that the wounded were rushed to the nearby Wadia and Medicare hospitals.

The jeep of the sub-divisional-magistrate was also damaged in the stone pelting and police resorted to firing in the air to disperse the mob.

Meanwhile, curfew, which was imposed till this morning in the blast locality near Noorani mosque was relaxed today, police said.

The blast took place near a hotel in Bhikku Chowk around 2145 hrs last night and the bomb was reportedly planted in a silver coloured Hero Honda Passion motorcycle, which was found near the site, they added.

The four deceased have been identified as Shaikh Rafiq Shaikh Mustafa, Sayyad Jahir Sayyad Nisar, Sayyad Azhar Sayyad Mohmmed and Shaikh Fakir Shaikh Liyakat, police said.

Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil and Guardian Minister Chhagan Bhujbal will be visiting the town today to take stock of the situation. PTI
